From Alabama to Louisiana...

Statement of Service in Mexican War
James Jones dated 14 August1893

The Davis Family

Thus far, I've taken this line back to James Jones born 15 April 1823 in
Greene County, Georgia. James spent his youth in Perry County,
Alabama, and was a veteran of the Mexican War, serving a
twelve-month period from 13 June 1846 to 27 May 1847 as a
private in Captain William Coleman's 1st Alabama Volunteers. He
participated in two battles, the Battle of Monterey where he was wounded,
and in the Battle of Vera Cruz.

After his service, James returned to Perry County where he married
Nancy Cawley on 19 December 1847. Nancy was born on 12 November 1826
in Edgefield, South Carolina. The couple had 5 children, and in 1864 moved
their family to Sabine Parish, Louisiana. James received a pension for his service
in the Mexican War beginning in January of 1887 until his death on
2 April 1895. A widow's pension was then granted for Nancy until her own
death in 1899.
